I read this book in India while I was spending my winter vacations there. I didn’t know that the author was a woman under the name of George Elliot.
Adam Bede is a carpenter who falls in love with Hetty, the most beautiful girl of the village, but he doesn’t know that she has a secret love affair with his best friend, a young nobleman.
Obviously, Adam Bede cannot get married with the girl he loves. On the other hand, the young squire doesn’t marry Hatty due to his higher social standing. The aftermath of the love affair between the squire and the beautiful girl is tragic. The squire realizes that he has made a mistake but it is not possible to fix it by now. There are mistakes that cannot be fixed!
It is a lovely book. Through it we can have a look into the old England and into the woman’s soul as well.

Ettore Grillo, author of these books:
– A Hidden Sicilian History
– The Vibrations of Words
-Travels of the Mind
