If you go to Sicily, don’t miss visiting Lake Pergusa, near my hometown of Enna. It is not an ordinary stretch of water but a place full of energy. Sometimes, the water becomes red like blood.
According to mythology, this is the place where Hades, the god of the underworld, abducted Kore while she was plucking flowers along with other nymphs. Kore was Demeter’s daughter, the goddess of agriculture.
On the slopes of the hill there is a forest of pine trees, eucalyptuses and cypresses. Walking there, you can breathe phytoncides which have a healing power.
Pergusa is the only natural lake in Sicily and a few years ago it seemed to be completely dry. Nowadays, there is a considerable amount of brackish water. There is no fish except tadpoles from which frogs derive.
These days, there are not many car races and the place has returned to the primeval silence. Was it Demeter’s will?
